Cryosurgery

A gentle, effective, minimally invasive approach to removing unwanted tissue.

Cryosurgery is a safe and non-invasive medical technique that uses extreme cold to gently freeze and eliminate abnormal or unwanted tissue. At Dr. B Integrative Veterinary Care, cryosurgery offers an excellent alternative to traditional surgery for many skin lesions—without anesthesia in most cases.

How Cryosurgery Works

Cryosurgery uses super-cooled liquid nitrogen or nitrous oxide to rapidly freeze targeted tissue. This process causes:

  • Controlled destruction of abnormal cells

  • Minimal discomfort

  • Highly precise treatment

  • A natural healing response

As the frozen area thaws, the damaged tissue begins to dry, form a scab, and eventually fall off—allowing healthy tissue to replace it.

What Conditions Can Cryosurgery Treat?

Cryosurgery is ideal for a variety of skin lesions, including:

  • Warts and papillomas

  • Small benign tumors

  • Cysts

  • Skin tags

  • Overgrown or cosmetic lesions

  • Some eyelid or facial growths

  • Lesions that are difficult to surgically remove

  • Growths on older or anesthetic-sensitive pets

It is also an excellent option for pets who are not candidates for general anesthesia.

Benefits of Cryosurgery

Cryosurgery is popular among pet owners because it is:

  • Minimally invasive

  • Low stress for pets

  • Quick—often done in minutes

  • Usually does not require sedation

  • Bloodless and clean

  • Affordable compared to traditional surgery

  • Safe for older or fragile patients

  • Effective for many types of lesions

Most pets tolerate the procedure extremely well.

What to Expect During a Cryosurgery Appointment

Your pet will receive:

  1. A full exam to determine if cryosurgery is appropriate

  2. Gentle restraint or light sedation if needed

  3. Targeted freezing of the lesion with liquid nitrogen

  4. A short procedure time (most are under 10 minutes)

  5. A complete home-care plan

Most patients can go home immediately after the appointment.

What Healing Looks Like

After treatment, it is normal to see:

  • Swelling or redness

  • A moist appearance early on

  • A dry, firm scab forming

  • Tissue turning darker over several days

  • The treated area falling off naturally in 1–3 weeks

Healing is usually quick, simple, and low-maintenance.

Is Cryosurgery Safe?

Yes. When performed by a trained veterinarian, cryosurgery is a safe, highly precise procedure with very few complications. It avoids general anesthesia and minimizes stress, making it ideal for many pets.
